Gorkamorka Empty Gorkamorka

Post  Velsharoon Sat Feb 05 2011, 00:28

Shamelessy stolen from http://www.the-waaagh.com/forums/?showforum=19

Gu'd Day Yoof,

I see yooz 'ere ta lurn abowt wat Gorkamorka iz. Well lemme tell ya...

Gorkamorka is a skirmish game that was released in 1997 as part of Games Workshop's Specialist Games range, although it was not hugely successful and fell out of favour. A number of Ork players have kept the game alive over the decade or so since its release, and in 2007, to coincide with the release of the new Ork Codex for Warhammer 40,000, the main Gorkamorka rules were made available on the Games Workshop website.

It survived long enough for the release of an expansion, Digganob in 1998, which featured rules for 3 new factions: Diggas, Rebel Grots and Muties. It also featured a number of Special Characters, who were used as mercenaries. As of yet, Digganob is not available on the Games Workshop website, but can be found on the internet.

Gorkamorka featured the Orks battling each other in the desert wastes of a distant planet, that the Orks dubbed Gorkamorka. Its actual name was Angelis, and it was being surveyed by the Imperial vessel Eternal Vigilance. There was an investigation party from the ship on the planet's surface, excavating an area around some strange Pyramids, an undoubted sign of the Tin'eads on the planet.

An Ork Space Hulk crashed into the planet, taking the Eternal Vigilance with it, and causing a great gash in the planet's surface, now called Da Skid. The planet was irradiated by the fallout of the two ships, which spawned the zealously angry Muties.

The Orks at first decided to gather the scrap and build a massive construct in the middle of Mektown. Opinion was divided over what it was for, although as an effigy, there was no more fiercer debate than whether or not it represented Gork or Mork. A massive civil war erupted, between the Morkers and the Gorkers. Eventually it grew to such proportions, that a sabotage attempt on one of the camp's workloads caused a massive explosion. In desperation, the Mekboys of Mektown decided on a compromise, deeming it Gorkamorka.

The factions weren't totally satisfied by this, but it placated them. The current ideology of the Orks today is that the Waaagh! should begin anew, so work is devoted to the collecting of all scrap from the desert planet to rebuild their ship, and take to the skies on a glorious new Waaagh.

This has become the current setting for the game. Each battle denotes the fighting between factions (the Gorkers and Morkers are still at it) over scrap, in order to earn their "Tags" which gets them a place on-board the Waaagh when it resumes.

The Muties want to enact revenge on the Orks for their present condition, so they raid the Orks to steal the scrap to prevent them from taking it back to Mektown, and thus escape their wrath.

The newly excavated Diggas (who have some strange and ominous protection from some strange creatures in the dark depths of the Pyramids) very much want to emulate the Orks, so are gathering scrap to earn their place on the next Waaagh.

The Rebel Grots emerged from a Grot Rebellion over the fact that the Grots could never earn Tags, although it has descended into an even larger coup to be free of the Orks completely.

The game itself is based on the 2nd Edition 40k ruleset (which was the ruleset out at the time), although it owes its existence to the ethos and style of the Rogue Trader game Confrontation (the origin of Necromunda). It may be a little complicated for new generations of gamers used to more "simplified" rules of later 40k editions.

The Rules are in-depth, and use an innovative system of campaign rules to allow your mob members to advance, gain new skills, and new enhancements, but also injuries from battle. The system itself has its roots mostly in vehicular combat, but it isn't completely so. It's just the fastest way to get around.

Gorkamorka players also usually have their own forts (as each Ork Faction at least, should have one). Mobs fight generally for scrap (but there are also other scenarios), and the game is widely acclaimed for its amusing, roller-coaster ride of victory, defeat, and quite unbelievably awesome and funny in-game shenanigans.

The rules are freely available from the GW website http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?community=&catId=cat410008&categoryId=1100014&aId=5300012

The models are just GW orks or if you want OOP stuff there is always ebay. I also have lots of orks (thanks Karl!), and hope to secure lots more so you can buy individual models at 10% off retail, you will need to buy your own trukks and trakks unless I secure enough of them. A gang is only about ten models so it wont break the bank, and any money I get from people buying individual models will be put back into buying more orks Rocking

Several factions are difficult to get hold off so feel free to use other manufactuers and to convert your own stuff.

The campaign is not going to be scheduled like the Calaxian one, it will just wax and wane according to if people want to play it, so far it is myself and GeneralDisarray and we plan to have a practice couple of games while we build and paint everything. If you want to take part you dont need to paint your stuff but it helps Big Grin

If anyone has any of the old gorkamorka or ork stuff they are willing to trade give me a shout.

Andrew I have an entire ork army that was passed to me free on the basis that it find a "good" home. I have no need of them and they're sitting in my wardrobe doing nothing. There is:

1 x Ghazkull Thraka (metal - old version)
1 x Bad Moon Nob in heavy armour (metal)
1 x Goff Nob (metal)
74(!) x gretchin (plastic - from 2nd edition 40k box set)
19 x Boyz (plastic 1-piece-mouldings with bolt pistol & axe - from 2nd Ed 40k box set)
4 x 40k Boarboyz (painted - regular boars not Cyboars)
2 x Wartraks
1 x Wartrak scorcha
1 x Warbuggy
4 x Warbikes
1 x Looted Battlewagon (bitzed-up Rhino painted in Blood Angels colours - should therefore go fasta!)
21 x Boyz (painted - mixture of plastic + metal kits)
2 x Burna Boyz (metal)
37 x Boyz (late 80's/early 90's "Space Orks" box, mostly un-built, some built but in need of cleaning-up)

A significant part of the army is un-painted/un-built/in-need-of-some-repair but they're up for grabs if you want them to hand out to folks who want to get a mob together...

Neil & Andrew I'll get them up to Arkham and leave them for you asap. I've transport difficulties in getting up there (see how long it took me to get the 'munda-friendly scenery up Embarassed ) but I'll do my best.

Jb that's incredibly generous, I think the fairest thing to do is for people who want to play post their rosters to this very thread, first come first serve and it will sort those who are genuinely interested from those wanting to grab a freeby.

I should also mention that we will be looking for people to produce orky desert terrain, not a requirement but something to aspire to!
Edit, were in belfast are you from? We go up every wednesday from lisburn road.

There should be some (but not loads) desert-style terrain at Arkham already. I left a scheme up very early-on (it included a CD-rack doubling as a massive water-condenser amongst other things) which might do.

Think I saw the thread you guys got going a while back about lifts; I'm living just off the Belmont Road in t' East.

Very generous of you JB, guessing that was stuff Dave C passed down? I was reading this and thinking I'd be interested but can't really afford to buy anything, if I could even borrow some of the stuff you're donating to give it a bash that'd be great.

Read the rules sounds hilarious, doesnt seem a whole lot more complicated than necromunda.
definitely be interested in playin.

I found the additional rules, rules for muties and grot rebellion etc
This can be downloaded from here, includes rules from the gamesworkshop site too.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IKEWVUJ1

I will hopefully do a grot rebellion mob if no one objects.

I have a proposition for this fantastic offer from JB, now this is subject to Andy's thoughts as he is running point on the Gorka campaign.

Instead of everyone digging in and lifting this and that, why don't we leave this all as the Arkham Gorka stock with Andy as custodian, so it means there will always be a good variety of stuff for this campaign and any in the future.
So even if people come and go there will always be a nice collection to run this?

Open to the house guys, opinions please

To be honest it wouldnt work, the stuff needs converted heavily after a couple of games and it wont instill ownership and pride in the gang. A lot of it wont be any good anyway depending on how old it is (people wont want the really old plastics unless money is very tight, its only newer stuff and vehicles that really appeal).

2 or 3 gangs will get a head start from this and thats satisfying enough.

Mike rebel grots sound fine, better get converting our scouring ebay for cheapo deals. I know I am looking to get some myself Big Grin

Go for it lad Big Grin

Just make sure they are WYSIWIG re weapons.

Check these auctions out to see the absurd prices

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Warhammer-3x-Gorkamorka-Grot-Orks-Models-Metal-/120678948291?pt=UK_Toys_Wargames_RL&hash=item1c19069dc3

I depending on how futher trades go might be worth combining for a bigger purchase as cheaper then.

But I think we shall have enough to work with now.

Will have a look later on when I get a chance. You can have anything of mine you need, how are you planning to make big luggas and cuttas etc?

After my initial gang would love to convert a mutie one, there is a guide on warseer somewerre . Plus diggas are pretty awesome to. I would like to remind everyone that conversions and counts as will be the rule not the exception unless we get lucky and score some unique stuff.

Ok no worries you might as well buy a gretchin box set they are cheap and I have a box already that will be your dudes sorted. Remember as well that every model needs transport, for this campaign I want us all to have 40k bases to avoid confusion so we will have to figure out transport capacity for vehicles$

Umm but doesnt this make the single greatest rule ever written obsolete????? You know where if models fall off the vehicle whilst moving they take a wound

This stuff came from another Dave (Dave S) at work. I'll try to get it up to Arkham asap addressed to Andrew (Velsharoon) and Neil to distribute since they're organising this, but anyone's welcome to whatever they want from it. From the sounds of it I'm guessing some of the older models won't be picked-up. If so we could always keep the unpopular stuff at Arkham for people to have a "first-game" with before they commit to spending hard-earned cash on the gang of their dreams.

Incidently I have copies of "Da Roolz Book" and "Da Uvver Book" and a couple of summary-tables cards (even a couple of turn- and blast templates too I think) which came with the models. I'll pop them in with the army when I get it up to Arkham.

Gary you could approach Craig about his Orks - he has since moved on to other armies so may be willing to part with them for some of your spare marine stuff (last I heard he'd gone Iron Hands).
