David (aka Thrawn)
Hi everyone
I'm David, off of Carrick. I game with a relatively small and informal group (of which a few members have already joined this forum). I'm currently loving 40K, in which I play Dark Angels, but I've also played a fair bit of Fantasy in the past. I've also dabbled with Mechwarrior if anyone's heard of it.....? I think my biggest Nerd qualification is definately my love of comics. Obsession is a strong word, but nevertheless accurate.
Looking forward to coming down and meeting everyone!

Shouldn't the first question you're asked on this forum be, "Who approaches?"

mechwarrior aka battletech is a great gaming system, I've been fond of it for many many years :)
Re: David (aka Thrawn)
Someone who's heard of Battletech! I've loved the fiction for years, but by the time I managed to get interested in playing it they'd replaced the classic system with Mechwarrior Dark Age. It's good fun all the same- it's a clix system, so pretty easy to come to grips with.

Thats what I've done too, read all the books the tech manuals and loved it then when I wanted to play it was harded in N.I finding people who played it. Still.. that didn't sotp me gathering and painting mechs during my non Gw years.
How many of the books have you read as I found about 90% to be great reads if you didn't try to make logic of them and take it too serious.
The darkage... well actually the Jhiad was when i cut off the storyline for my own evolution... WOB making new mechs and bombing the Inner sphere into war was a little too far fetched for me (Mostly the mech designs screamed gundam/macross types to me which I didn't think suited).
A campaign of it would be interesting to run. allows both roleplay if players wished and good old mech fights.
whats your fave era then of the fights or books?
Re: David (aka Thrawn)
I've got all the core fiction books- by that I mean all the ones that advance the overall storyline. I think Stackpole's a great author, it led me on to his Star Wars Rogue Squadron stuff, which was enjoyable, but not up to to the same standard in my opinion. I was pretty disappointed when they closed off that era, but I think they ended it well. The Dark Age novels I've read haven't been up to the same quality, so I'd have to say that in terms of fiction I vastly prefer the classic era- I think Phelan is a great character!
In terms of gaming, I've only got experience in the Dark Age, but I really enjoy it- simple to learn, fun to play. I've gotten one of our group enthused enough about it to buy a batch on ebay, so I'm looking forward to testing it against my stuff. Such a shame they're not making it anymore!

I shamefully got a ton of the Dark age boosters from the first set through to the 3rd set. Hoarding them all in parents house. Tempted to sell it all as I don't think i'll get round to playing it, but some do look awesome especially some of the named mech warriors. Though they did put some of the mechs way out of scale... the cougar is huge compared to the hatchetmen!!
Loves phelan, Kai was a badass who everytime he went huffy destroyed worlds nearly through luck and skill. Did you read stackpoles trilogy where the heirs work together to learn to figh tthe clans? Kai in that vs Sung Tzu was funny how much he loathed kai and wanted to see him fail.
Spoiler of the event incase you haven't read it
- Spoiler:
- Kai and him do a doubles match vs 4 of the best mech pilots including hanse Dvion, the wolf dragoons and other royal leaders who are considered mech warriors without peer in combat.
Sang tzu shoots one of Kai's tergets and bails out laughing as he hopes it shames Kai. Typical Kai realises and goes his usual damnit I can't do this i'm a faulire self. destroy's 7 out fo the 8 with the 8th only just taking him down before he finished it off.
The Leaders then go on to explain how it was them the kids fought and how glad Kai on their side... yet he sees his run as a failure.
Lot of the personalities were good to read. though I agree stackpole was a great author. I got so addicted I collected all the novels over the years thanks to that first one I ever read... stackpoles book 2 of the trilogy. Great writer and great books.
Re: David (aka Thrawn)
Yeah, Blood Legacy was one of the first ones I ever read too! Years of ebay, library sales and second-hand bookshops have finally almost completed my collection. The only one I'd really love is Sword and Dagger- I think it was the very first one written and it seems to be incredibly rare. House Liao almost manage to replace Hanse Davion with a double, which is referenced in loads of other novels, so I'd love to read the original.
If you do decide to sell your stuff, let me know- I can't make any guarantees, but I may be interested in some of it. Wife permitting of course!

I won't be selling them anytime soon, after doing about 6 years like you did, ebay, book stores etc I got the entire collection including the first edition prints.
I'd sell my 40k before the battletech books and source books. their stuff is brillant to read. Sword and the dagger is in my opinion and alsot o add to your giddyness a great book.
I'm going to maybe order some of the newer tech readouts but i've got the main ones i like (Origional 3025, revised 3025, 3050, 3067 i think it is, basically all of them up to project pheonix).
I'd be interested in trying it out again as a tabletop game. So many mechs and they get so little attention :(
You collect the minis at all?

Dave, I've always considered you slightly twisted.
And Duce, if you check out the wargaming section, I've added a Battletech/MechWarrior topic in which we can continue our chat- I thought it was about time!
