With GW again getting the licence for games based around this upcoming movie, what are the thoughts of the LOTR gamers at arkham?
Will this be a new system for GW to flog to film fans or will there be more support for these old(er) systems for LOTR.
Personally I would like to see it being linked into WHFB, don't know if that's possible but seems like a logical progression?

They arent allowed to mix the two games hence the different scale in miniatures. If they did the magazine with free models again I might pick it up. Have to re read the hobbit to!

in all honesty it seems likes a lead ballon. there are no real battles in the hobbit. par the battle of five armies which is already a specialist game.

they'll probably do some kind of scenario based game. like their original LOTR game. 13 dwarfs bilbo and gandalf Vs Goblins/wolves/spiders/trolls/smaug. they could even do a space hulk style escape from Thranduil'd dungeon! it's a perfect opportunity for a smaller scale LOTR specialist game.

They could do a Inquisitor style of game with 58mm, that would be awesome. The figures that is, not the game.

or they can do what they want, as has been seen in Lotr of late

this is GW we are talking about, at some point the battle of five armys will become a big part of war of the ring, and as andy said they will do small scale stuff like they did at the start. You have to remember that at the start of Lotr, the main people buying the models were not wargamers like us, but fans of the story and films.. and after a time im sure GW will treat it just like any other system and rape the shit out of it, i mean look at war of the ring its apoc for Lort.

hahaha, it's so true. Isn't it funny that even if you love the games they do you can't deny that they're all about the money. I only ever play GW games, some of them are great games, but i avoid the shop like the plague. and i despair every time they release another overpriced all-new-bigger-than-our-previously-biggest-plastic-kit-ever! I saw a picture in this month's WD and it had what must've been over a grand worth of miniatures crammed onto a battlefield corner to corner with barely a whiff of daylight between the units and i just thought, "that game would be a total nightmare to play." That picture is not about the gaming it's about the drooling kid factor.

I suppose you could say they can do what they like with their own games, but when it comes to LOTR they don't seem to be driven by any kind of respect to stay in keeping with the original concept. it's all aiming for the bigger the better and the actual story can naff off.

all new The Hobbit Tabletop Wargame! Our BIGGEST BOXSET EVER! Field an army of 200+ Hobbits including Wheel Barrow Hog Chariots and over 30 Shire pony cavalry in a massed invasion of the lonely mountain To take on SMAUG (sold separately) and his brood of Dragonling Wyrm-lords and the ravening hords of warg riding goblins led by the evil gold hungry THORIN OAKENSHIELD. Can Bilbo steal Thorin's Gold and defeat the mighty dragon? You decide!

Even 20 years ago I wouldn't have let GW anywhere near the lotr material, for me the plot of the hobbit (and lotr) are all about trying to avoid war, so wargaming in that setting just seems wrong to me. I have no intention of ever playing lotr, wotr, bofa or any other fla middle-earth based wargame. Then again I have some fairly deep-rooted issues when it comes to things I am passionate about (like the lotr and 40k universes) so it's not really surprising; I even felt fairly *wrong* the one time I played MERP...

...maybe it was the fla. Razz

It will be hard to see where they can go with it, they've already expanded the range far beyond the original 3 movie based stuff and into the realms of everything middle earth based. I always liked the skirmish game and I think the war of the ring ruleset is actually really nice, feels like a streamlined warhammer fantasy thats much quicker to play with lots of figures, but as much as I love the books I have never been nearly as interested in gaming in that setting compared to GWs own created universe with 40k.

And ofcourse they're going to milk the license for all it's worth but at the end of the day they're not going to buy the license for any other reason than financial anyway and Lord of the Rings itself has become a huge money spinner look at all the LOTR based junk you can buy now since the movies, you can get anything from a replica of the one ring, to Pez dispensers!

Aw man I remember that, it was those magazines that got me into the LOTR game in the first place.
