Brushes at the ready - Painting competition!
After a reasonable discussion with Ivor last night and a forum discussion here I've decided to take the plunge and run this thing.
So here goes:
Introducing the first (annual? who knows) Arkham painting competition; Arkham Angels*.
* I have borrowed the use of the Arkham logo without permission in this picture, I have also randomly grabbed and adjusted an "angel" image from the web. It represents a purchaseable statuette that can be bought here. I just made the picture up because I though the comp deserved one, but if there are any copyright or legalistic issues with this image I will gladly take it down.
How to enter:
Step 1. Paint one of the following -
1. A single miniature; any type, any genre, any game system, any scale, any** size (Yes, Duce, if you want to get the rollers out and dulux weathershield-up that above-scale Warlord Titan of yours you -theoretically** - can).
2. A gang/mob/squad/squadron of 3-20 miniatures; again any game system, any genre, any scale, any** size. If the entry represents mechanised infantry (or equivalent) the transport vehicle(s) can be included but each will count as one of the 3-20 miniatures allowed.
3. A Diorama. 1+ minatures doing... ...something. Choice of miniatures completely free and can be combinations of different types, genres, game systems, scales, sizes** is completely up to you.
** do be considerate to the amount of space that Arkham has available though, please!
Step 2. Bring your lovingly painted entry up to Arkham between Arkham's birthday on Friday (the 20th of May 2011) and the 19th of June 2011.
Step 3. Fill in a small card (which will be supplied) with the following details:
1. your name
2. your forum-id (or age if you are under 18)
3. a title for your entry (e.g. Raven Guard Captain, Wolf's Dragoons Lance, British 1st Paratroopers LMG team, Bert's day out)
4. the game system(s) on which your entry is based if applicable.
5. for which of the 3 above categories you wish your entry to be considered
Step 4. Leave your priceless craftsmanship in the safe hands of the Arkham staff until the 21st (ish) of June 2011.
Step 5. Periodically visit Arkham in the interim to view the growing collection of high quality works, partake in games, purchase those shiny things that have caught your eye and bask in the atmosphere of convivial bonhomie.
The competition
On the Monday the 20th of June 2011 photos will be taken of each entry (hopefully using Andy B's Digital SLR and Trev's light-box to ensure high and equal image quality) of each entry and all of the pictures - together with the card details for each - will be posted in the Arkham Forum and Facebook page to allow all and sundry to check them out and vote for the single entry that they deem the best overall.
The voting period will be 1 week (you can vote up until - and including - 23:59:59 GMT on Monday the 27th of June).
Entries can be collected any time after the pictures have been posted.
The winners will be announced as soon after the close of the competition as we are able to collate and count all of the votes.
How to vote
There are two different ways to vote. You get one vote and one vote only, you are not required to vote in each category.
1. Post on the Forum thread saying something like "I think jb's zombie-halfling is the best entry."
2. "Like" your choice of image on Facebook
Non Arkham members are also allowed to vote (we'd like to encourage traffic to Arkham's forum and Facebook site from other gaming forums too) and can do so by "liking" their chosen entry on the Facebook page.
YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO VOTE FOR YOUR OWN ENTRY!
How to win!
The entry in each of the 3 categories that receives the most votes will win that category.
The single entry that receives the most votes will win the overall competition.
The entry by an entrant aged under -18 that receives the most votes will win the Cherubim category. It is possible that the Cherubim winner could also win their chosen category AND the overall title.
Can I cheat?
Probably, but if we find out that- or how you have we'll be unhappy .
What you win
Prestige, satisfaction, bragging rights... ...maybe some goodies too (we'll see!)
What else is in it for me?
Handily this competition finishes scant days before another (probably larger and at this stage more prestigious) painting competition at Q-con. Paint an entry for this, get it back and enter the Q-con one aswell, you could represent Arkham and win two competitions for the price of 1!
On your marks...
set...

Re: Brushes at the ready - Painting competition!
Incidently it may not be necessary to leave your entries at Arkham. If Trev (& his lightbox) and Andy (& his camera) happen to be up when you wish to enter you may be able to get your entry photographed immediately - in which case there's no specific need to leave your minis there.
However I think it might be nice to have a bit of an ongoing display of the entries in the centre.

Re: Brushes at the ready - Painting competition!
Not being able to paint won't stop me entering; it's all for fun so the more the merrier, no matter the painting standard. That message will hopefully be reinforced to Arkham's younger patrons too, and I'm sure you'll be encouraging them to take part, Andy.cthulhubruce wrote:if only i could actually paint :-(
P.S. Hope you don't mind me volunteering the services of your camera.

Like I said in the other thread, love the idea and I'll definitely be entering, now it just depends whether I have the time to make a diorama, or if I'll just be boring and paint a nice figure.

Re: Brushes at the ready - Painting competition!
Just one entry each guys! You wouldn't want to split your votes and reduce your chance of winning now would you! Not that there's any reason you couldn't paint an entry for all 3 categories then choose your favourite to enter.kwi wrote:Or all 3!BloddshotDAVE wrote:im in, but what to do, single fig, a unit, or a diorama
Incidently minis that come with with more minis that are supposed to be on them (Mumaks, Stegadons, Arachnarok Spiders etc) can be entered into any of the categories, since they are effectively a single figure, a unit and a diorama all in one.

Re: Brushes at the ready - Painting competition!
I mentioned it to Rik on Saturday but I think it'd be funny to make a Diorama of a Blood Angel and Necron high fiving atop tyranid corpses, I even got a great caption from the heresy forums "bros before xenomorphs"

Surprised you havent made a category where we have to purchase a model at arkham and paint it for the competition, as the gamesworkshop store used to make us do.
Or a simple one of everyone paints a standard single space marine.

Heck no, this is the brave new nerdy world of Arkham. Paint whatever you want from, whatever game system you want, any way you want. The only reason there are any categories at all is to give more people the satisfaction of winning and to showcase the talents (or in my case maybe just undaunted-by-ineptitude enthusiasm) of our gaming community.Revic wrote:Surprised you havent made a category where we have to purchase a model at arkham and paint it for the competition, as the gamesworkshop store used to make us do.

Re: Brushes at the ready - Painting competition!
Competition opens tomorrow guys! Anyone who has already(!) got their entry finished can start leaving them up to be photographed/put on display from tomorrow.
The eagle-eyed of you may have noticed this in the entry guidelines:
*Or tipp-ex over any mythic MTG card that Gary M (meleth) picks up in the midnight booster draft and write on that, why not

Well I'm afraid I've not been able to get up to Arkham in the interim to leave up prepared cards. I'll make an effort to get some sorted out tomorrow and sent up (I'm not available to come tomorrow either, curses), but if I don't manage - and if anyone has been super-keen and wishes to enter tomorrow - please write the above details on something handy, like a piece of paper*.jb wrote:Step 3. You could do that but then I'd be forced to end you.
I have my idea down for the competition and ordered some bits today to pull it off, I just hope I can get the time to complete it, but I'm pretty psyched!
